Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is a beautiful city with amazing mountain views. It is also known as the city of Mozart--his birthplace. They take full advantage of that historical fact because everywhere you go you see Mozart advertised--Mozart museum, art gallery, statues, candy bars (which are quite good actually), and on and on.

To me it kind of felt just like I was still in Germany--they speak Deutsch, you will see people with the traditional outfits (drindls, etc.), and they are on the euro and have items priced very high (especially in the tourist areas)--it felt like a big city in Germany.

Getting There

We drove to Salzburg and it took us a little under 3 hours to get there.

*Special Note: Before you cross the border in to Austria you have to purchase a vignette (your toll) to travel on the Austrian highway. You will see tons of signs at different gas stations/rest areas right before you hit the border to purchase your vignette. The Austrian vignette cost 8.30euro for 10days.

Must Try: St. Peter Backerei-- its a tiny bakery next to the water mill where they make fresh bread by hand and it is so delicious (the sweet bread was the best 1euro).

Hellburnn Palace & Trick Fountains

We took the tram (bus) to Schloss Hellbrunn--tram drops you right off in front--to see the trick fountains.  We didn't really know what the fountains were all about but we figured being near some water on such a hot day was a good idea.  It actually turned out to be a GREAT stop; we all had a lot of fun and were able to cool off as well.

The Trick Fountains tour ticket cost 5.25euro per adult and it also includes entrance into the Hellbrunn Palace.

*Special Note: the kids will love the fountains because you never know when or where the water is going to turn on while the guide is talking so everyone has a chance of getting wet. The best part was hearing the screams and seeing people running because they just got squirted by the very cold water.

*Special Note: We purchased a 24hr tram/bus pass from our hotel for 3.80euro per adult. With that ticket we were able to get around the entire city.

Salt Mine

We drove to the Salzbergwerk salt mine in Berchtesgaden it took about 35 minutes to get there from our hotel in Salzberg. On our drive there we experienced some amazing views!

We arrived at the mine a little before 10am and their were people already there and big tour buses pulling up. We hurried in and were able to get our jumpsuits on and join a group that was just about to start.

*Special Note: We chose the Berchtesgaden salt mine because they do not have a child age limit policy (children under 4 are FREE). Some of the other mines do not let children under 4/5 in so make sure you find out the specific policy of each mine.

*Special Note: get to the mine early because it is a popular tourist spot and can get very crowded; people are known to wait in line for more than 1-2 hours before they can get in. If you can't make it early in the morning try late afternoon before the last tour runs (around 4/5pm).

Hotel: Turnerwirt

Description: We reserved a triple room at this hotel and when we arrived our room was in the villa and it had 1 double bed and 2 single beds. The room was spacious and the bathroom had a nice large tub. Also on the hotel grounds was a large rabbit area and go carts/bikes with a dirt track for kids to play. If you are looking for a good priced no frills hotel with enough space, clean and in a good locations this is the place. Turnerwirt is not in the busy city center area its more in town with the locals. The best thing about this hotel is its right in front of the bus stop.

Breakfast: They do offer cold continental breakfast and coffee, tea, milk, etc. Its not included in the room price and cots 8euro per person. We didn't try the breakfast there but there are a lot of options near the hotel.

Restaurants: Since the hotel wasn't in the main tourist area we were able to find nice restaurants within walking distance. Every place we ate at was so delicious and the prices were great!!
